Singing and Practicing In The Rain

Day two gets wet

A light rain dampened, but never disrupted the second day of training camp on Ray Nitschke Field Friday.

The Packers worked in the steady drizzle through half the practice and Head Coach Matt LaFleur said it was welcome after a steamy 85 degree opening day workout.

The weather didn't alter any of the planned drills, LaFleur said short of a deluge or lightning, the team will practice in the elements because they'll probably be playing in them down the road.

There were a couple of snaps that offered an indication of just how much of a work in progress LaFleur's offensive system is early on.

In a 7 on 7 drill, Aaron Rodgers looked for Davante Adams on a hook route about 15 yards downfield.   Adams turned outside, the ball went inside and Kevin King said "Thank you very much" with a gift-wrapped interception.   Later in a full team drill, DeShone Kizer executed a clean play action fake and found Equamineous St. Brown streaking downfield behind a corner and he hit him in stride for a 70 yard touchdown.

There's still communication snafus but there's no question the playbook has the potential for big plays.

A couple of players went down at practice, defensive back Tony Brown left briefly but returned.   Linebacker Kendall Donnerson pulled a hamstring during a special teams period and didn't come back.

There were two new players on the practice field Friday.  Defensive lineman Eric Cotton was released to make room for another lineman, former Wisconsin Badger Oliva Sapagolu.

Sapagolu injured his shoulder and his senior year with the Badgers was cut short after 8 games.   He never got a call during the draft and had a couple of tryouts earlier this summer.

The 90th roster spot was filled with a veteran running back, Corey Grant, who played his first four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars where his offensive coordinator was the current Packers OC, Nathaniel Hackett.

Grant played in 38 career games with the Jags, starting four.  He ran an eye opening 4.24, 40 yard dash at his pro day coming out of Auburn.

After practice I caught up with both players to find out how they wound up in Green Bay, beginning with Olive:

The Packers will don shell shoulder pads for the first time Saturday morning and Sunday at 10:15 AM will be the team's first full pads workout of camp.
