Welcome to Green Bay Rookies

Rookie Mini-Camp begins

It's becoming apparent Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur  would rather teach by doing than talking.

His rookie mini-camp began with a late afternoon practice on Friday and LaFleur was right in there with the quarterbacks, firing pass after pass to receivers.  When asked if he'd need to ice down his right arm, LaFleur joked, "I threw some good balls out there, man."

This weekend though is more about teaching than throwing.   He has the 2019 draft class, undrafted free agents and 20 tryout players in for a couple of workouts and plenty of meetings to get the rookies indoctrinated into LaFleur's system.

At his post-practice news conference, LaFleur was asked what he wants to get accomplished this weekend and if any of the young players stood out.

The Packers didn't waste any time with contract negotiations for the rookie class.   Six of the eight players selected have already signed their rookie contracts.

The Packers announced Friday the two number one picks, Rashan Gary and Darnell Savage, fifth rounder, Kingsley Keke, the two sixth rounders, Ka'Dar Hollman and Dexter Williams and seventh rounder Ty Summers are all in the fold.

Only second rounder Elgton Jenkins and third round pick Jace Sternberger have yet to sign.  Both attended but Sternberger didn't practice because of an illness.  LaFleur hoped he'd get on the field Saturday.

The draftees were made available one by one in the locker room after practice and Savage talked about getting acclimated, signed and started with his professional career.

There are three quarterbacks in for a look, including Manny Wilkins of Arizona State.   LaFleur said he was among the 30 pre-draft interviewees before the draft.    Taylor Cornelius of Oklahoma State and C.J. Collins of SW Assemblies of God are being given a tryout.

Another tryout player is running back Taiwan Deal of Wisconsin.

The team will take a week off after this brief camp but get back at it with organized team activities that will run for three weeks before the team's mandatory mini-camp in mid-June.
