MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) -- The Marshfield Fire Department says a Monday morning fire caused minimal damage to a home on South Cedar Avenue.
The fire was reported at around 8 AM Monday on a mattress in the second story of the home. Crews were able to respond quickly and contain the fire to the mattress. Damage was contained to the single room of the home and is estimated to be about $1,000.
It's believed that the fire started due to careless use of smoking materials, although the investigation into the incident remains open. The burnt mattress was removed from the home and officials say water damage to the home was limited.
Deputy Fire Chief Jody Clements said the home did not have any working smoke detectors, so the family was lucky to detect it early. Clements called it an opportunity to remind everyone to check their smoke detectors, especially during the winter months. "They were very, very lucky to be able to recognize the smoke in the building. If this was in the middle of the night, who knows it could have been very tragic."
Clements recommends that each level of your home have a working smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector. "Make sure that they are there and they are functional."
The residents of the home will not be displaced, and no one was injured in the incident.
