WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -- The Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce set a new selling record this year for their gift certificates.

Over $700,000 worth of gift certificates were sold this year by the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce. That figure topped the previous record for the Chamber by over $100,000.

Marketing Manager for the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce Brian Otten says one of the big factors for the increase in sales was that member businesses bought more certificates. "I'm certain that the reason we sold more this year was because those member businesses, a lot of whom will buy thousands of dollars of gift certificates for their employees, that they bought more this year."

The certificates keep money local as they can only be used at member businesses. Otten is optimistic that those who buy and receive certificates realize their money stays local. "I hope that people understand the value in buying these gift certificates and keeping their dollars local in terms of where these gift certificates are redeemed."

Going into 2019, the Chamber expects to sell even more certificates. Otten hopes the future for the certificates keeps growing. "You know, we're always going to sort of look for bigger and better things in the New Year. So with more than 700,000 sold in 2018. I would hope that we can push that number up even higher in 2019."

If you haven't purchased a gift certificate yet from the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce, they are sold year round. The certificate lasts for a year and can be used at almost 900 member businesses. You can find a list of member businesses on the directory at the Chamber's website.
