FINLEY, WI (WSAU) -- The Hardwood Range complex at Camp Douglas has been declared hazardous to hunters.

In a press release issued by the Wood County Sheriff's Department, the United States Airforce and the Wisconsin National Guard warned hunters that they enter the property at their own risk.

Captain Joe Trovato of the Wisconsin National Guard says the release was to give hunters a heads up about the conditions."So we were just doing our due diligence and making sure that people who are hunting there understood there are hazards associated with accessing that property."

Trovato explains some of the hazards that hunters could encounter when trying to hunt at the complex. "Tripping hazards with some of the inert ordnance that is dropped in the area. We don't use anything that is really going to pose like a kind of explosive risk. It's more that there's the possibility that there is some debris potentially in the area."

He stresses that nothing has really changed at Hardwood Range. "It's just a courtesy heads up. You know nothing has really changed on Hardwood Range at all. It's always been open to hunting for sixty-five years since the range has been operational."

Trovato did say the release was timed with the beginning of gun deer hunting season. Those that would like more information on the complex can contact the Wood County Sheriffs’ public information line at (608) 377-2924.
