WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -- Road crews have been hard at work keeping roads safe for drivers over the past week.
After getting over a foot of snow in under a week, plow crews in Wausau are working hard to keep roads safe for residents.
The City of Wausau's Public Works Director Eric Lindman says that as of Friday afternoon crews have gotten through all of their routes after 12 to 16 hours of work. "All the crews got through their full snow plow routes today by about 2 o'clock this afternoon I think. So they were just doing some final cleanup and they're going to go home and get some rest and come back in about midnight tonight [Friday]."
A snow emergency was put into effect on Thursday afternoon which meant vehicles were not supposed to be parked on the street. Lindman says the only big issue plow crews had was on Scott Street Friday morning.
"We did have some issues over on Scott St. this morning because we haven't done snow removal downtown yet. And when those banks start pushing out into the parking spaces, when cars try to park there they're actually in the driveway. The police department did issue some tickets and people were in paying today."
Lindman is appreciative that throughout the snow emergency the majority of residents tried their best to stay off the streets. "I think everybody tried their best to stay off the streets and not park on the streets. And we didn't have a whole lot of complaints from people on this [snow emergency]. So we appreciate their patience as the crews work through all of their routes to get the streets cleared. And hopefully, by the end of the weekend, we'll have all the snow removal and stuff caught up. And then we'll get ready for the next event."
Downtown snow removal will begin on Friday evening after midnight and will last through the weekend. More snow is expected for the Wausau area on Tuesday totaling several inches. Lindman says crews will be monitoring the weather until the next event and may pretreat the roads 12 hours before the storm comes if temperatures are warm enough.
